Worried about the taxi ride? Here’s how new lucknow taxi safety rules are helping to make travel safer, smarter and more comfortable for all.
Lucknow Taxi Safety Boost
- In an attempt to ensure safety of passengers, especially women, the Uttar Pradesh Transport Department has issued a new directive for all commercial vehicle drivers in Lucknow.
- Drivers of all ranges, including autos and e-rickshaws, and app-based cabs like Ola, Uber and Rapido will now have to display their identity cards in their vehicles.
- That includes the name and Aadhaar number of the driver, as well as the driver’s mobile number, all of which are displayed to the rider throughout the journey.
- The rule, already on the books, provides drivers 15 days to do so before penalties are imposed.
Why Lucknow Is Acting Now
The directive has been issued by the department based on a letter from the chairperson of the State Women’s Commission, dated May 26, seeking urgent steps to ensure safety of women using public transport.
A few recent cases involving female passengers, especially in autos and e-rickshaws, had exposed loopholes in driver monitoring prompting the department to act swiftly.

With public transport being a daily necessity for many, the lack of identifying information on drivers made it difficult for passengers to report misconduct or feel secure.
What the New Rule Requires
Mandatory Driver ID Display
Every commercial driver operating in Lucknow whether driving an autorickshaw, taxi, e-rickshaw, or working with ride-hailing platforms like Ola, Uber, or Rapido must now post their:
- Full Name
- Aadhaar Number
- Mobile Number
This information must be placed in a spot easily visible to passengers during the ride.
Officials say the measure is designed to offer greater transparency and build trust, particularly for women commuting alone or at night.
Enforcement and Deadline
Drivers have been given 15 days from the announcement to make the necessary changes.

After the grace period, violators could face penalties under the Motor Vehicles Act.
Authorities Speak: What They’re Hoping to AchieveTraffic Officer Prabhat Pandey commented on the initiative, saying, “The goal is to give passengers—especially women—a sense of security.
If they feel something is off, they can easily share the driver’s details with someone they trust.”
Authorities believe the visible ID rule will deter misconduct and promote responsible behavior among drivers, knowing they are easily identifiable.
What Happens Next?

The pilot phase of the rule starts in Lucknow, but if successful, it may be rolled out across other cities in Uttar Pradesh.
Transport officials are also exploring digital options to supplement the physical display—such as QR codes linking to verified driver profiles.
For now, commuters in Lucknow can expect to see nameplates and ID cards inside their rides.
And if all goes as planned, they’ll feel a little safer, too.
