Road closures during the Kanwar Yatra in Basti are causing long travel delays for villagers, with many forced to take longer routes amid heavy security. Here’s how it’s affecting daily life.
This year, the Basti district is seeing heightened security measures, especially along the main highways, causing major disruptions for everyday travelers.
Highway Shut from Basti to Ghaghwa
To ensure smooth and safe passage for Kanwariyas (pilgrims carrying holy water), authorities have closed the national highway stretching from Basti all the way to Ghaghwa.
Barricades are set up at multiple points, and police pickets monitor the area around the clock.
The main thoroughfare that once connected villages and towns in the region is now inaccessible to the general public.

Local facing problems
For residents of nearby villages and small towns, this sudden blockade has been a major headache.
Despite urgent needs or emergency travel, many find themselves stopped abruptly by police personnel.

For example, on Sunday, travelers were only allowed to move between Basti and Haraiya. Beyond that point, no civilian passage was permitted.
The Kanwar procession began from Ayodhya, passed through Haraiya, and reached Basti on Monday, prompting the full closure of the route to avoid any disturbance during the pilgrimage.
Manoj Kumar from Kaptanganj told his problem
“Every year, I come to Basti via Ganeshpur or Nagar Bazaar. But this time, with the highway shut, it’s been really tough,” he said.
Police barricades have blocked usual paths, forcing people to find alternate and longer routes.
Another resident, Madan Murari, was stopped by police near Futhiya when he tried to drive to his village, Nachna, just 8 kilometers away.
“I had to take a much longer detour through Kalwari to reach home,” he recounted with visible frustration.

Effect in district’s village
Villagers from Mahmudpur, Reharwa, Bansapar, Badhani, Tilakpur, and Kaptanganj are also facing trouble reaching the district headquarters.
For many, simple tasks like buying groceries or attending to official work have become complicated journeys.

Some Advices For Travelers
If you’re planning to visit Basti or nearby areas during Sawan, be prepared for road closures and extra travel time.
Authorities prioritize the safety and smooth flow of the Kanwar Yatra, but this inevitably causes inconvenience for residents and casual travelers.
While the Kanwar Yatra is a deeply spiritual and important event for millions, balancing pilgrimage security with public convenience is challenging.
Hopefully, authorities will communicate alternative routes and solutions to ease the troubles of locals in the coming days.
Until then, patience and planning are key for anyone navigating through Basti and adjoining regions during this festive season.
